Traverse City at Risk Boxing Program for Youth

November 12, 2007
Board of Trustees Meeting

A recent article on Charitable giving appeared in the Traverse City Record Eagle. About half of the 5264 Michigan charities had only two of fours stars for efficient use of money. Only 21% had 4 stars. The author of the article summed it up well by saying, "In my eyes, getting ripped off by a legitimate charity is worse than getting taken by a bogus one. You think your doing good and all you're doing is helping pay someone’s salary."

The funding for Traverse City At Risk Boxing comes through grants, fees, gifts, and boxing shows. All cost have fallen into three categories: maintaining a training facility, equipment, and travel cost for competitions. The majority of funding for the training facility comes from a grant from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa Chippewa Indians. The existing program could not sustain itself without their benevolence. The good news is that not one dollar at TCARB has gone to professional fundraisers or employee salaries. Our volunteer USA coaches work with area youth creating a community atmosphere where kids have an opportunity to succeed. The bad news is that although the membership has increased the opportunities for competition are cost prohibitive because of a lack of travel funds. The program has developed many capable athletes and any additional revenues will be used for this purpose. In the past the gym has produced many State Champions, a National Champion, and one of their athletes was an alternate on the 2004 Olympic Team. It is their hope to continue this success in the future. All donations are tax deductible. You can be assured that your gift will be used to its maximum potential. Any donations can be made directly to T.C. At Risk Boxing, 1220 Woodmere Traverse City, MI 49686. Contact either Bill or Robbin Bustance at 231 933-7050 for more information.

About the coaches

Bill Bustance started boxing 40 years ago. He competed successfully in amateur boxing, professional boxing, and MMA. Bill retired from the ring and now focuses his love of the sport on coaching those who want to learn the skills and discipline of boxing, be it competitive or recreational.

Robbin Bustance also experienced competitive boxing in the 90’s. She served on the Michigan Association of USA Boxing as co-chair for women's boxing. She was team manager of the Michigan women's team at Nationals in 2002 & 2003.

The Bustance's have trained State Golden Glove Champions, national champions, professional boxers & MMA fighters. Even though they love the competitive spirit, Bill and Robbin enjoy training individuals to achieve health goals as much as they like winning championships.  Both are level II Certified coaches thru USA Boxing. USA Boxing certification requires seminars, clinics and continued education in the areas of nutrition, sports medicine, injuries, training methods and boxing techniques. They network with some of the sport of boxing and continually gather information to hone their teaching skills.
